This was a lovely transformation of a small front garden, the planting beds had become uncoordinated and soil conditions had suffered over time with the small lawn becoming more and more difficult to maintain to a high standard. The garden is on a slope and is half in sun and half shade making the choice of a coordinated planting scheme a little more interesting.
The shape of the patio created by the new sweeping retaining wall really invites you in, whilst creating easy access for all and making maintenance much easier. The choice of materials with new railway sleepers forming the circular retaining wall and resin bonded gravel patio give a premium finish.
To make sure the garden looks good in every season, winter form is provided by evergreen photinia and hebe. The colour scheme for spring and summer is a restricted pallet of red and yellow from an existing rhododendron, and newly planted heuchera and astilbe. Two impressive small trees, a cascading acer and dwarf weeping birch, will enhance the vertical space as they mature, without ever becoming over bearing. The border close to the house is planted with shade loving hostas and ferns with occasional flashes of colour.
The birdbath was chosen for its quality and height and is positioned as the main focal point from the lounge window and in the centre of the patio, attracting local bird life and providing enjoyment for the clients, it’s these finer details that make the difference and pull together the whole garden concept.
